Oh no! I just had my <a href="http://toomanyfrogsand1brit.co.uk/2007/12/26/white-christmas-2/" title="first ever raclette" rel="nofollow">first ever raclette</a> in France - so I can understand your joy at the Swiss raclette... but I really feel your pain about the Canadian one!

hahaha, yes :)

well, the comforting thing is, i think, that Canadians are not trying to say that this is Swiss raclette.

They just have a Canadian Raclette (in fact, the canadian work colleague who i spoke of in my post didn't even know that raclette was swiss)... Because Canadians have some pretty decent cheese too, and that's what they use for their raclette.

but then lots of cultures often argue over the true origin of a certain dish...

I have had this experience more then once with food I've had the pleasure of eating in the coutry of origin versus North America. One could say the same for most Thia and Chines food. So many things aren't "authentic" and made to cater to this odd belief that more is better. It's a quantity versus quality debate.

I too lived in Switzerland for years - and like you prefer Raclette. I now know ... not to bother with it here and to just wait for my next visit to "heaven".
